I-26 at I-95 Interchange Improvements
Project Description
SCDOT proposes to improve the I-26 and I-95 interchange in Dorchester and Orangeburg Counties. The interchange is located at Exit 169 A/B along I-26 and Exit 86 A/B along I-95, approximately 8 miles east of Bowman and 11 miles west of Holly Hill. The interchange is located in Orangeburg County; however, project limits will tie into I-26 and extend slightly into Dorchester County.
A range of improvement alternatives are currently being considered, including:
A mix of flyover on ramps and loop ramps
Newly constructed ramps to reduce or eliminate conflict points among all vehicles
Updated ramp lengths to provide improved access for more vehicles and reduce congestion along the mainlines of I-26 and I-95
Because a large interstate improvement project like this one does not happen very frequently, space would be provided for future widening projects of both I-26 and I-95.
Purpose
and Need
The I-26 and I-95 interchange is listed as the third highest-ranked rural interstate improvement project in South Carolina. The need for the improvements stems from operational challenges, notably addressing weaving movements originating from both on and off-loop ramps. These improvements aim to mitigate issues such as rear-end and sideswipe crashes, ensuring a safer and more efficient traffic flow. Additionally, the upgrades are poised to alleviate travel delays attributed to weaving and merging, enhancing overall transportation efficiency in the region.
